A field guide to disinformation

mixing truth with lies to distract and discredit

One tactic that the US Empire uses to deflect effective criticism is to control both sides of a debate. As the United States population has become more savvy about official conspiracies against democracy, especially with the rise of the internet, efforts to misdirect critics have also accelerated.

No one is likely to have a perfect understanding of the precise boundaries between best evidence of scandals, unintentional misinformation and deliberate disinformation. Many people who believe in falsehoods that were deliberately created to mislead are sincere in believing these errors -- but their sincerity does not make a wrong point of view correct.

Perhaps the best guide to determine the most productive areas is to review the distractions from the corporate media and alternative media. With the 9/11 issue - perhaps the most popular and important conspiracy claim - the media highlight the "no plane" hoaxes and speculations about the collapse of the Twin Towers, but never discuss evidence proven beyond reasonable doubt:

"A honey pot, in intelligence jargon, is a tempting source of information or 'dangle' that is set out to lure intended victims into a trap. Ultimately the honey pot is violently and maliciously discredited so as to destroy the credibility of anything stuck to it by association."

the job of spies is to drive countries crazy with imaginary consipracies and to do their damnest to addict leaders of countries and the citizenry in their self-serving paranoia. Not many can avoid the pervasive growth of uncontrolled contamination by artfully hyper-suspicious spies and their even more unaccountable overseers. A few protestors complain more loudly than others -- canaries in a coal mine. One cannot be too paranoid about spies and war lovers, so the spy industry heartily and lucratively whisper, as ever, in secret to their employers, promising protection against the horrific.
Aping predecessors the US national security mavens and their over-armed minions are angling for addictive war in a dozen locations, their militaries stronger and more wasteful than ever, the spies feeding avid believers of Walter Mitty. Neither Obama or McCain, alarmed by grim secret briefings, have the guts to stop this conspiracy of nutters overjoyed at the prospect of inflated threats forever at home and overseas.

Our customary warning is to be skeptical of anything placed online (or offline), in particular the web sites and news outlets which claim to publish controversial material as well as those which publish the most banal -- any source can be contaminated by those who claim highest trustworthiness. Messing with public information is a long-standing practice of public officials and those who blame public officials to conceal their own perfidy. Thus, we periodically remind to not trust Cryptome, trust only yourself. The greatest hazard is ignorance cloaked as authoritative wisdom.
Cryptome, aspiring to be a free public library, accepts that libraries are chock full of contaminated material, hoaxes, forgeries, propaganda, cruelly damaging autobiographies, biased biographies, bald-faced lying facts and hypnotic fictions, official statements of affirmation and denial, agenda-promotional vanities, planted errors and deliberate omissions, censored and redacted documents, holy writs and devilish deceptions, concocted mysteries and beguiling fables. Astute readers, seeking relief from manufactured and branded information, will pick and chose, strike their own balance and off-balance among the best and worst among thousands of libraries few of which brag of marketing-grade trustworthiness most closely associated with snake oil, chauvinism, nationalism, evangelism and the commerce in authoritative owning of information by copyright aggression.

Identifying Misinformation: State Department’s Rosetta Stone for understanding 9/11 disinformation

It should go without saying that an investigation of a conspiracy like 9/11 will always a two-front war against disinformation. On one side are the gatekeepers pursuing a limited hangout. On the other side are crackpots and disinfo agents pushing bogus, discrediting evidence. Weeding out bogus claims is neither gatekeeping nor censorship but an absolutely critical activity.
-- A Critical Review of WTC 'No Plane' Theories, by Eric Salter 28 September 2005 www.questionsquestions.net/WTC/review.html

"Lots of conspiracy theories are bogus, but rejecting them all just because of how they're framed is not wise. The way it is today, a gang of conspirators could get away with anything: they just need to start an Internet rumor of what they just did, framing it as a conspiracy theory, and anyone who tries to talk about it will be ignored."

In the information society, bad information drives out good information. The proliferation of misinformation causes the dilution of good, factual information. Valuable information on actual cover-ups, for instance, is discredited when other alleged, but non-factual and misleading, conspiracy theories are given undue currency. In short, bad conspiracy theories discredit all assertions of conspiracy, making for fertile ground in which actual conspiracies thrive. [emphasis added]

Successful propaganda is not "based on lies but rather on truth interpreted in a particular war," wrote William Dorman. While the Reagan administration's presentation of the Flight 007 case did contain outright falsehood, limited truth and irrelevancy were much more common. As Anthony Marro put it, half-truths are "a specialty at the State Department" and for a reason Tennyson described a century ago:

That a lie which is half a truth is ever the blackest of lies,
That a lie which is all a lie may be met and fought with outright,
But a lie which is part a truth is a harder matter to fight.

BLACK BOOMERANG
THE WORLD WAR 2 TOP SECRET BRITISH BLACK PROPAGANDA OPERATION.

excerpt for fair use

It was the Navy that first saw the potential of black propaganda, Ian Fleming personal assistant to Admiral Godfrey approached Delmer with the object of setting up a dept in naval Intelligence to further the U boat war. It was to be the Navy who by backing Delmer and black propaganda allowed it to develop into the powerful weapon it eventually became. The Navy managed to pry Aspidistra the biggest transmitter in the world from the BBC and black propaganda created for them the live news station Atlantiksender, broadcasting non stop music, hot jazz, swing and news for the u-boat crews.

This was not black propaganda it was something new, “Grey” and in essence was all the more dangerous for German morale. The U-boat crew listeners realising it‘s “allied” origins became deeply alarmed at just how much the enemy knew. What could be more horrific than being deep below the surface and feeling that the enemy knew exactly who you are and where you were? With a growing first rate intelligence dept, daily intelligence reports from the Navy and the Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Cage’s, personnel information culled from newspapers, periodicals even letters from families of captured German’s they gained names and details to add to their stories“ Cover, dirt, cover, cover, dirt, cover, dirt" is the approximate rhythm -'dirt' being the items that would make the listeners think and act on lines displeasing to their Fuhrer. It was a huge success!

With the dramatic launch of Soldatensender Calais came a move to 24hr broadcasting on medium wave, with a softening up operation in preparation for the invasion of France. The stories that went out over Soldatensender were re-used for the production of a daily newspaper bombed in to Germany, Nachrichten fur die Truppe. From its earliest days black propaganda with its own master forger had used printed matter as part of its output. Everything from forged ration books identity cards to official German documents anything that they could put a subtle and insidious black twist upon.

Soldatensender brought the first news of the D Day landings to the world. The breakdown in communications between the German units at this period was so grave that many German commanders tuned in to Calais for `situation reports' using them to chalk in corrections to the constantly changing order of battle on their staff maps. This information was 99 times out of a 100 correct on the hundredth it would drive the Germans into a trap set by the allies.

The breaking news on the 20th of July the attempt on Hitler’s life, was for the Black Propaganda team, to become the greatest news story of the war. The revolt of the army against Hitler and the Party was the consummation of all they had been working for. They played it to the full implicating as many as possible in the plot. With all this to encourage them, the Soldatensender demanded that an end be put to the war to save Germany. And in their self-appointed capacity as spokesmen of the `decent fighting frontline soldier' they turn the heat on Hitler.

the Karl Rove strategy of promoting true material wrapped in a package of lies, such as the supposedly fake documents given to CBS News (see BS?) in September 2004 that had the accurate conclusion that Bush went AWOL from the National Guard. That smear alienated the rest of the media from looking at the story, which helped to ensure that the point spread between Kerry and Bush would be thin enough for vote fraud to tip the balance to Bush.

"The 9/11 Truth Movement gives one insight why the term 'conspiracy theorist' came to be shorthand for "discredited whacko" in the invisible guidebook of mainstream media. "Suddenly, it's not hard to understand why the obvious anomalies in the JFK assassination never received proper attention in accepted media channels.
"If you have just as many nutty theories about the driver of the limo turning around and shooting JFK as you have honest scientific inquiries about the real probability of multiple shooters, the wheat drowns in the chaff."

most popular 9/11 truth hoaxes:

  1. no planes on 9/11 (hoaxes about all four plane crashes: Pentagon, WTC and Pennsylvania)
  2. demolition theories about the World Trade Center and Building 7
  3. the Jews did it (Israel had foreknowledge and probably played a role, but that doesn't justify anti-semitism and Holocaust Denial)
  4. the victims' phone calls were faked (a way to keep the 9/11 families and the skeptics from working together

Many 9/11 websites that claim to have proof about 9/11 complicity promote claims that are not true -- a few appear to be promoting nonsense deliberately. Most of the liars make sure to include enough real material to establish their bona fides before lying.

Many websites, publications, books and movies that contain erroneous information about 9/11 complicity issues are well-meaning and merely have been fooled by some of the hoaxes -- but good intentions do not make false claims true.

The REAL evidence that 9/11 was an inside job is hard to find due to loud liars offering phony evidence used to distract (and discredit) 9/11 skeptics. The growing flood of fake claims for complicity is evidence of a sophisticated psychological warfare effort to cover the tracks of the conspiracy.

Blurry photos that magically appear years later, just as the 9/11 truth movement grows in popularity and political influence, are not evidence of what happened. Just because someone says "inside job" does not mean that their theories of what happened, whether well-intentioned or malicious, are proven or even provable. Many, if not most of the people echoing these hoaxes are sincere in their beliefs - but their sincerity doesn't make these claims true, nor does it mitigate the ridicule factor that the hoaxes generate among the majority of the public. The idea that 9/11 was an inside job is a difficult enough point of view to advocate for the majority of people in the United States without making the thesis dependent on blurry images or other fraudulent types of evidence -- it is critical to focus on the claims that are proven beyond reasonable doubt, with the highest quality documented evidence.

A major component of the "inside job" thesis is that 9/11 was at least in part a "false flag" operation, staged by the US government to discredit its opponents in the Middle East in order to provide the pretext to seize the oil fields and impose the "Homeland Security" police state. It would be naive to assume that the "inside job" conspirators were not also conducting false flag operations to persuade the public that 9/11 skeptics were easily debunked in order to hide the actual evidence for complicity.

Some of these claims are probably disinformation to smother actual evidence with distracting nonsense, but some are possibly created (or at least echoed) by people without fact-checking abilities. These increasingly wilder stories make truth seeking far more difficult. These smokescreens obscure public examination of a large body of incriminating evidence that is proven beyond reasonable doubt plus other evidence that has good standards but is not totally proven.

9/11 Five Years Later: What Have We Accomplished?
An Assessment of the 9/11 Truth Movement
By Emanuel Sferios
Monday, Sep 11, 2006

.... One of the characteristics of 9/11 disinformation a lot of people have a hard time grasping is that much of it is designed specifically to convince people of US government complicity in 9/11. This might seem like a contradiction, until one understands that 9/11 disinfo is part of a broader system of mass manipulation where the opposing perspective plays an essential role. The basic idea is to control both sides of the debate, and frame it in a way that makes the opposing side ineffective (not necessarily unbelievable). In the end it doesn't matter whether even a majority of the people believe the US government was complicit in 9/11 (this is already the case). What matters is only that the perpetrators can never successfully be prosecuted. Thus they pollute the body of evidence with red herrings and false lines of inquiry. If, in the process, they happen to cause some people to disbelieve the official story (as in the case with the "no plane at the Pentagon" hoax), all the better, because the end result is a weakening of any legal case that might be brought against them.

There is an important quote by E. Martin Schotz from his book, History Will Not Absolve Us: Orwellian Control, Public Denial, and the Murder of President Kennedy. It is: "One of the primary means of immobilizing the American people politically today is to hold them in a state of confusion in which anything can be believed and nothing can be known." Conspiracy theories, in other words, provide the perfect cover for real conspiracies. When anything can be believed because the available information is a convoluted mix of truth, falsehood and probability; when the actual truth itself is convoluted, involving deception, mystery and illusion; then one is ultimately left to their own emotions to decide. And emotions, of course, can be easily manipulated. What do you want to believe? After all, it's up to you. You'll never know the truth, or at least you'll never be able to prove it in a court of law. Do you really want to be marginalized and ridiculed as a conspiracy theorist? You get the idea.

.... That side of the Pentagon was virtually empty and had been for some time because the building had been under reconstruction quite visibly on that side for 5-6 years and part of that was to reinforce the building from external attack. In fact some photos show the difference in damage on either side of that reinforcement work and it is striking. That plane went 270 degrees out of its way at high speed, a very sophisticated maneuver with no possible military advantage, to hit the empty side of the Pentagon. There, as in New York, I would argue that they minimized the number of deaths by timing and method of attack.
.... There is no question that Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. Remaining agnostic on this point also gives ammunition to the perpetrators of the stand-down and serves to discredit the other good work that continues to be done about the reality of what happened that day. It is my feeling that this thesis was actually part of an intentional disinformation campaign that spreads red herrings to discredit the real findings. [emphasis added]

why are there "no planes" hoaxes?

Much of the bogus evidence about 9/11 was manufactured to support the official conspiracy theory -- 19 guys directed by a dialysis patient in a cave of Afghanistan managed to outwit the largest military and intelligence system in history, a system so incompetent that it needed a massive budget increase to protect the public from a repeat of the attack.

A different kind of bogus evidence -- which makes wild claims about complicity based on poor quality, doctored images -- became increasingly prominent as the 9/11 Truth Movement experienced growing popularity.

This material claims to be investigative journalism but is not.

This is probably why bogus websites and fake films with disproved material have been developed to distract from the best evidence of complicity. These websites promote the idea that blurry photos with illogical and supported claims should be the basis for 9/11 truth outreach efforts, instead of the issues surrounding the failure of the Air Force to intercept the hijacked planes and the suppression of warnings that 9/11 was imminent.

This site received threats, harassment, and was the target of a "snitch jacket" campaign (false accusations that activists are actually agents provocateurs) for daring to post this information, but the "no plane" supporters do not offer actual evidence for their extreme claims (some arguments may appear real unless you check the "facts"). These campaigns appear impervious to facts, they are psychological in nature, not evidentiary.

It's hard to prove that this campaign's websites, movies, and books are intentional governmental disinformation, and many of them probably are not even if some of the original ideas were your tax dollars at work. The best covert operations are those that manage to fool people into participating without realizing they are acting on behalf of a hidden controller. If the most aggressive promoters of the disinformation are truly private citizens without any covert connections, making up these claims without receiving a paycheck from a government agency or military contractor, they are missing a profitable opportunity.

Films, websites, books and other efforts that promote false claims with good intentions would benefit by contemplating the difference between an editor and a censor. A politically motivated censor defending the official story would prohibit publication of any claims of 9/11 complicity. The claims debunked on this page could not survive close scrutiny by a careful editor, but an honest editor would still allow the best evidence to be published, even in a peer-reviewed publication. No publication is infinite in size, and no reader has infinite patience to read everything, so any publication by definition must make some editorial decisions to decide what is and is not put into print, broadcast on the air, or posted to a web page. Peer review is not censorship.

"if you don't have anyone attacking you, you probably aren't shaking up the status quo."

www.awitness.org/journal/september_11_norad_standdown.html

... perhaps this spreading of such nonsense around is part of some psyop by some intelligence agency in the government the purpose of which is to create people just like me who are reacting with growing disgust and deep mistrust and suspicion to each and every new 9-11 conspiracy type story that comes out, having been burned so many times before, and thus this psyop can work to undermine any 9-11 investigationand protect not only the airplane multinationals, but all the other corporations of the world, who also get shown the same favoritism by the government, even if it means sacrificing public safety for corporate profits so as to prop up 'consumer confidence'...however, while that could be true that these conspiracy stories are part of a psyop to discredit the investigation of 9-11, there are a lot of people working on their own as well, who pick up the merest shreds of evidence and then attempt to make a case using hyperbolic assertions which are intended to strengthen an otherwise weak argument) ....
That '9-11 in plane site' is so utterly absurd, and such a worthless conspiracy theory that perhaps it is actually supposed to be a parody of all the 9-11 conspiracies to date...
And if that is true I want to salute the creators of the 'in plane site' website for creating what would have to be the cleverest parody site on the internet this year, in that it really is a classic emulation of everything that is wrong with 9-11 conspiracies on the internet...
Either that or it is just a real classic example of a really really stupid conspiracy theory, in that case, making it an unintentional self parody...
As for my self, if this is a psyop, its working great, because, I, like so many other people am developing a firm resistance to so called 'evidence from 9-11' and the second I hear such things I immediately kick into resistance mode and I am not the only one...
And then people say you are a 'government stooge' or they bewail the fact that the public 'resists the truth'...
As for me well was that a global hawk engine? I think I'll just pass on that 'evidence' and maybe wait a year or two or three...
If anyone is wondering what creates people like me well just consider a classic example of the type of crap going around all the time, '9-11 in plane site', either the cleverest parody or the best example of those 9-11 conspiracy theories warts and all, or part of a very successful psyop designed to permanently shut down the 9-11 investigation... [emphases added]

I think there's a grave problem of "sexing up" the truth with spectacular yet specious arguments. For instance, some of the splashiest and attractive 9/11 material is devoted to supporting the "Pentagon Missile." Sure, it gets people's attention - in fact, it dominates the public perception of alternative theories of the attacks - but is it right? Well, no; as I've said, I don't think so. And truth will suffer again and again when those who fell for the missile "hook" come to the same conclusion and chuck the whole thing, and those who were turned off the "missile" refuse to look any further.

One of the ways these guys keep us from figuring out what is really going on is by hiding some truth behind an absurdity.
Examples:
* Bush being wired in the debate
* Bush's air national guard docs
* No plane at Pentagon
* No Plane in field in Shanksville
* Two towers that by amazing odds fall straight into their footprints supposedly because a motley crew of Arabs flew planes in them
* We spend billions on spying and national security, yet we can't stop stuff from happening even while we are watching them
* We want Osama but when we have him cornered he is allowed to get away
* exit polls show people voted for Kerry but Bush wins
Now I don't know what the truth is behind those theories above although I have my own ideas... but I do realize when a calculated con is being played on us.
As the nation gets closer to the truth, watch as the truth suddenly gets attached to the certain untouchable subjects to discredit those who attempt to go after it. Attaching ideas to Anti-semitism, Nazism, or silliness such as holograms seems to be some of the better ways to discredit ideas that may have been worth looking into.

Scientific skepticism is not dead. And scientific method is not dead. What is dying is the ability of this current generation to reliably and accurately describe what they are experiencing or to HONESTLY describe what they are experiencing. We would rather scapegoat and project rather than confront truths.
The whole world is washed over in lies and disinformation right now. Thank your intel agencies and money grubbing religionists for most of that. Just like in ancient Rome, the increasing lunacy is simply a byproduct of the lies of protectionists trying to keep the many in a state of poverty and confusion.
One man's UFO is just another man's black budget spy plane.
One man's ghost is just another man's waking dream.
One man's strange perception of coincidental strangeness in the world is just another man's dawning realization of the relationship of the microcosm to the macrocosm.

"A pattern rarely admitted by the West's institutional media."
Rarely admitted that we follow that pattern too. Its always others elsewhere that do that evil stuff.
There seems to be a trend of this sort.
This guy (Macbeth, great name) and 911 show a similar pattern.
There is (potentially) an ugly truth, either US military violence against civilians, or US admin complicity or responsibility for violence against its own and foreign civilians (in the WTC, Pentagon and various aircraft).
Extreme sensationalist claims surface that may be true (No jews died in the WTC) others events that are confirmed, like the van full of Israelis, are shown to be true and suddenly the claim seems even more plausible. That claim is then exposed as crap, and particularly offensive crap at that, (especially if you are related to some of the dead Jewish paople from the WTC).
Other amazing, hard to credit claims follow, the planes were holograms, or weren't there or whatever.
And the money trail, or the stupidities, like the finding of a highjackers passport in the rubble within 12 hours of the event, or the reports of the Seattle Mayor [note: San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown] being warned not to fly to the east coast on 911, or the Bin ladens charter flight out of the US during the "no fly" period; all that disappears under the weight of scorn flung at the claims that are wrong.
Here we will show you the truth, but only in a form you cannot possibly believe.
Very clever.

There have been three bumps in the history of the discussion of the truth of what happened on November 22, 1963: the Garrison investigation of the late 1960's, the official investigations of the mid-1970's, and the release of the Oliver Stone film and the resulting forced disgorging of some secret documents during the 1990's. Between those bumps there have been long stretches of wheel-spinning, where absence of new information meant that conspiracy buffs spent their time constructing dream palaces in the air of their own imaginations. Those who conspire must love this, as the buffs themselves create the forest of misleading data in which the truth can easily hide. The main problem of conspiracy research now is separating the disinformation from the truth, with by far the greatest collection of disinformation created by well-meaning but misguided 'researchers' who, in the absence of new data, let their imaginations run wild. It is sad to see exactly the same thing happening in the field of discussion of September 11. The Bush Administration has successfully managed to completely stonewall even the rather suspicious official investigation, and I have not seen any new important revelations in at least a year. People who rode hobbyhorses in the months after September 11 are still riding the same hobbyhorses, in love with their own theories more than the truth (my personal hobbyhorse is that November 22 and September 11 were arranged by the same two American institutional groups). Now we're even beginning to see the beginnings of the grand meta-theories, with the attack blamed on some secret conspiracy involving Israel (with the happy Israeli witnesses making a video of the attack paralleling the fact that Yitzhak Rabin was in Texas at Fort Bliss on November 22, 1963; it's as if Israel makes a point of sending witnesses whenever they hear about such things), or, in a possible attempt to shield Israel, weird conspiracy chestnuts like the Bilderbergers or the Illuminati (whatever happened to the Rockefellers, who used to be blamed for everything?). These meta-theories are worse than useless, serving as a method of appearing to discuss the case while simply constructing a wall of smoke. There is significant real information readily available if the American political situation would allow it to be released. I'd like to start with testimony from the pilots who just missed reaching the targets on time, and ask them who arranged for them to be so near and yet so far. [emphases added]

I, Left Gatekeeper
Why the "9/11 Truth" movement makes the "Left Behind" sci-fi series read like Shakespeare
by Matt Tabbi

I have no doubt that every time one of those Loose Change dickwads opens his mouth, a Republican somewhere picks up five votes. In fact, if there were any conspiracy here, I'd be far more inclined to believe that this whole movement was cooked up by Karl Rove as a kind of mass cyber-provocation, along the lines of Gordon Liddy hiring hippie peace protesters to piss in the lobbies of hotels where campaign reporters were staying. [emphasis added]

note: the truth is that it is both a 9/11 conspiracy and a disinformation conspiracy

911 Truth is an Inside Job!
January 26th, 2007

If you want to destroy the virgining [sic] anti war movement then what better way to do it then from within. Few Americans would argue the need to get out of Iraq ASAP, and many would be willing to stand up and be counted in a demonstration. But many of those same people would stay home if there had to march with a bunch of loonies spreading conspiracy theorist hype.

Of course we are talking about the so called 911 Truth movement. A small group of people who have let their penchant for conspiracy theories, a strident political agenda combined with a lack of knowledge and poor reasoning skills drive them into a world of delusion. You will find if you have to deal with any of these truthers they tend to buy a whole package, UFOs, NWO, ESP, TM, Astrology…….. the entire gamut of fringe culture bullshit, I somehow don’t think many intelligent thinking people would want to be seen in the same room with these purveyors of pulp let alone on the same protest march.

Now if I were the suspicious type I would think this was all a political dirty trick to undermine the anti war movement by painting them as part of the tin foil hat crowd. Not that unusual concept, the Johnson and Nixon administrations did plant people in anti Viet Nam marches to engage in acts that would give the impression all protesters were dirty Communist hippy types. I am sure the powers on Capitol Hill are delighted at the obsessions of these 9/11 cultists.

Back to the Wilderness
These days in the 9/11 Truth demimonde, early and clear-eyed researchers like [Peter Dale] Scott, Paul Thompson and Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed are rarely heard over the likes of Morgan Reynolds and the thermate/"mini-nukes" debate, and rather than contributions such as the discovery of 9/11's concurrent war games we have "scholars for 9/11 Truth" tearing one another new impact holes over speculation on space-based beam weaponry. If you think that indicates progress, and that we're closer to 9/11 justice than we were three years ago, I don't know what more to tell you.

Mark Twain on scientific evidence (thanks to badastronomy.com for the reference):

"In the space of one hundred and seventy-six years the Lower Mississippi has shortened itself two hundred and forty-two miles. Therefore ... in the Old Oolitic Silurian Period the Lower Mississippi River was upward of one million three hundred thousand miles long... seven hundred and forty-two years from now the Lower Mississippi will be only a mile and three-quarters long... There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact."

Dick Tuck
Dick Tuck was a legendary political hoaxer who made a career out of making life miserable for Richard Nixon.
In 1950 both Nixon and Tuck were near the start of their careers. Nixon was running for a California senate seat against democratic opponent Helen Gagahan Douglas, and Tuck was working for Douglas's campaign.
Nixon was running an extremely dirty campaign, making every effort to portray his opponent as a communist-sympathizer. This red-bashing had already worked successfully for him in a 1946 congressional race against the democrat Jerry Voorhis, and had propelled him to national fame as a member of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Tuck decided that he would undermine Nixon by getting himself hired as a campaign worker in Nixon's campaign, where he would secretly operate as a mole for Douglas.
As a campaign worker for Nixon, Tuck was responsible for organizing campaign rallies. He organized one such rally at UC Santa Barbara, and he booked the largest auditorium possible. However, he purposefully booked it on a day that few students would be able to attend, and then he barely publicized it at all. Therefore, when Nixon showed up to speak there were only 40 students waiting to hear him in a 4000 seat auditorium. Tuck got up on the stage to introduce Nixon and proceeded to deliver a long, rambling monologue in which he made frequent references to Nixon's cut-throat, red-bashing campaign tactics against Jerry Voorhis. Finally he announced that Nixon would now speak about the International Monetary Fund. Nixon, of course, had not planned to speak about the IMF. Therefore, when he got up to the podium he was momentarily speechless.
As Nixon's political star began to rise, Tuck continued to torment him. In 1956 Nixon was running for reelection as Eisenhower's Vice President. The Republican Convention was being held in San Francisco that year, and Tuck learned that the route taken by garbage trucks going to the dump led them right past the convention center. Therefore, Tuck paid to have all the garbage trucks bear signs that read "Dump Nixon".
In 1960 Tuck worked for Kennedy during the Nixon/Kennedy race. On the day following Nixon's first televised debate with Kennedy, Tuck hired an elderly woman to approach Nixon as he got off a plane, kiss him on the cheek, and say "That's all right, Mr. Nixon. He beat you last night, but you'll win next time." Nixon was reportedly momentarily at a loss for words.
Tuck also waged an ongoing effort to undermine Nixon's campaign effort. For instance, Tuck would pose as a fire marshall to provide low estimates of the turnout at Nixon's rallies for the media. He would also inform bandleaders at Republican rallies that Nixon's favorite song was "Mack the Knife," so that as Nixon took the stage he would be heralded by lyrics describing a rapacious conman.
In one legendary incident Tuck dressed up as a train conductor and signalled a train to leave the station while Nixon was delivering a speech from its rear platform. Reportedly, the train pulled out of the station with Nixon still speaking. (There is some doubt about whether this incident actually occurred).
In 1962 Nixon was touring the Chinatown section of Los Angeles as a gubernatorial candidate. Tuck arranged for Chinese-speaking residents of the area to greet him with signs that said 'Welcome Nixon' in English at the top, but at the bottom said "What about the Hughes Loan?" in Chinese characters. The Hughes loan referred to a highly suspect loan that the billionaire Howard Hughes had given to Nixon's brother Donald. Nixon, of course, didn't know what the signs said, so he waved happily at the sign-bearers while they all laughed back at him.
In 1964 Tuck himself ran for one of California's state Senate seats. His campaign slogan was "The job needs Tuck, and Tuck needs the job." Nixon came to town and endorsed Tuck's rival, so Tuck challenged Nixon to a debate and promised not to shave if Nixon accepted (a reference to the appearance that Nixon had a five o'clock shadow during his televised debate with Kennedy).
By 1968, when Nixon was running for President, Tuck had managed to make Nixon's campaign managers so paranoid that they began to undermine themselves. When a huge shipment of buttons printed in Greek, Chinese, and Italian arrived at Nixon's campaign headquarters to be distributed at various ethnic rallies in New York City, Nixon's campaign manager, remembering the 1962 incident with the Chinese signs, ordered that all the buttons be destroyed, just in case Tuck had tampered with them (he hadn't).
However, Tuck was up to his usual tricks during this campaign, such as when he hired several pregnant women to show up at Nixon rallies carrying signs that read "Nixon's the One."
By 1972 Nixon had decided that he needed someone like Dick Tuck working on his side. Therefore he hired Donald Segretti to conduct a dirty tricks campaign for him against his democratic opponents. In Nixon's words, he wanted his campaign to develop a "Dick Tuck capability." However, Nixon's effort to mimic Tuck's pranks lacked all humor and went badly wrong. Segretti's dirty tricks included forging letters to newspapers imputing sexual misconduct to Hubert Humphrey and forging letters on the stationery of Sen. Edmund S. Muskie that included language denigrating blacks.
Apparently Nixon realized that Segretti's efforts were not comparable to the standard set by Tuck. In a White House conversation taped on March 13, 1973 Nixon commented that it "Shows what a master Dick Tuck is ... Segretti's hasn't been a bit similar."
